Hmm. I think we’d be stuck with a recession either way, though. Either we shut down in essential services now to avoid overloading hospitals in a couple weeks, and the financial damage fucks people over, or we let the virus spread unchecked and way more people die, and the financial damage fucks people over and also lots more people have died.

There’s at least a possibility that some financial relief might lessen the burden on people who are fucked over by job loss. There’s nothing anyone can do to help people who die from this.

This. Losing your job sucks, but it sucks a hell of a lot less than being dead. Keeping people alive should always be prioritized over keeping them employed.

Yeah, I think it's hard to overstate how overloaded the hospitals are right now. And some of that's on them because no one ever takes emergency prep seriously until they have to, so a lot of them are scrambling to get everything in place. But then you've got widespread panic and PPE shortages (seriously, guys... stop buying N95s. most of you aren't wearing them right and you'd be better off with a cloth neck gaiter that you can wash and reuse.) Most of us do not want to be in the situation that Italy is in, where people are dying from all kinds of things because there's not enough ICU equipment to go around.

Keeping people inside isn't just about hiding from the virus. It's about reducing the number of people who have to go to the hospital because they broke their leg or wrecked their car or what have you. And it's about lightening the load of the people who are required to go to work and are being stretched to the breaking point right now.

And on a separate, but related, note... hats off to all the hospital custodial staff who are working with limited supplies for far less money than they're worth.
