I'm annoyed that the local grocery stores, in spite of claiming they are not price gouging, actually are.

Prices haven't gone up at mine.

We paid about 400 dollars yesterday for what was basically a normal delivery order (no stocking up, just the normal sorts of groceries we'd buy). Normally it might be around 200, so their prices have certainly gone up and maybe doubled.

Huh. What have they increased prices on? Is it across the board or just certain items?

Not defending price gouging if that is what's going on, but clearly grocery stores are incurring additional costs at the moment, so I could understand *some* increase in prices. Although if they've, say, doubled the price on toilet paper, that's dodgy af.

Everything we ordered except chicken according to my mother. We didn't order any paper goods, just food stuff.

One thing to watch out for is substitutions. What with the shortages, a lot of grocery stores are substituting different brands of items, and the less expensive brands run out first. If they're sending you Justin's because they ran out of Jif, that's at least double the price on your peanut butter.

Oh fuck yes they are. My mom was talking about how the only time she found toilet paper was when it was at a local store at over twice the price. I was mad at her for not buying some, but it was sold out all the same when she went back the next day.
Especially now that the government has shut down most other places, even if they're watching it, people are still buying them out, and everything is still a supply and demand. There is only so much product any distributor can create, (and as someone in that sort of business I know) especially when people are getting ill within the factories, there's only so long they can keep up with demand until they close too.

Even with a limit, people will go back however many times they feel they need until they sell everything out... I went back to a local drug store to pick up my meds, once with my dad and once without, and the cashier knew me but still had to ask if I'd just bought things there. I didn't buy anything extra, but just the same as when sales had limits before this crisis, they can't kick people out/decline purchase without reasonable proof. So even though I got my prescription filled pretty much first thing in the morning, the toilet paper, tissues, lysol wipes, sanitizer, and the last refill of soap (that I grabbed with someone else literally coming down the aisle looking for the same thing right after) were still all gone. So yeah. I definitely agree.

Rationing shouldn't be too difficult to impose in this day and age, and the sooner the better, say I.

Holy crap. I've been keeping an eye on the prices around here and haven't seen any gouging, thank fuck, but I feel for you having to deal with that. ugh.

My local supermarket put up signs saying there weren't able to handle sales prices so there were no sales. My first thought was: price gouging, but then I remembered there are sales every week and toilet paper, soap, and bread were pretty much gone from the shelves.
