Not the OP, but I would have to agree that Tennant is either a really bad actor, or just sucks at the Doctor. He's got two levels: hyperactive-teenaged-boysquee and OVERTHETOPSHOUTYOMGMARTHAYOUSPILLEDTHEMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILK. Oh, and sometimes he shuts up and they pour water on him and he looks constipated. Ugh.

I'm not saying everyone else was stellar. But compared to the performance Eccleston gave, Tennant is just an awful actor by comparison.

Well, okay. I mean, there's nothing you can say to convince me I'm wrong, and there's clearly nothing I can say to convince you that you're wrong, so yeah. Whatever.

I'd agree as far as to say that I think Tennant's Doctor has some weak moments where he slips into caricature; which I mostly blame on the writing (which I think tends to be very weak indeed). Overall though, I think his performance has given the character far more depth than he had before; he's a bit manic, but that's his style, and I think people who dislike him focus on that above all else, because I think he's an emotionally powerful and subtle actor despite the manic energy.

(I'm guessing you'd dislike his Hamlet as well; the two types of reports I've heard about his performance in that are 1) wonderful! from the majority of people, or 2) awful, he's too hyper.)

And much more than, "pretty" (because some people have suggested a non-"pretty" Doctor is no longer possible), I think the next Doctor had better have serious chops, or he'll be perceived as a downgrade to most people. Even if some Who fans will be cheering.
