AYRT - I didn't even know invisible hit counters were a thing. I can see the appeal. Though even putting aside the ethics of it, I'm not sure I'd bother because what I really want to know is whether people liked what they read, not just whether people read it.

I think most people are this way. Very very few people write solely for themselves

True. Also, some people have very little ability to view their work objectively, and I am definitely one of those people. I know what I think I've written, but I have no idea what I've actually written until I get feedback. So even if I was just writing for myself, there would still be this horrible chasm between my perception of my work, and the unknowable reality of it.
