The thing with judging Xander on a rewatch is... he's still a teenage boy/very young man, and one who exists frozen in time-- he's not going to be woke by today's standards. He's a product of his time and his privilege, but that doesn't make him the WORST, it doesn't make him irredeemable. It just makes him a person with flaws. We see him grow, we see him make mistakes that in a current work would be more major.

I understand people who dislike Xander on rewatching the show. There are parts of the show that are harder to watch and root for today than others. But you aren't OBLIGATED to dislike him. He has his good parts too. And it's easy to imagine his growth beyond what the show gives us, into a better man than we see.

He's a realistic depiction of a teenage boy in many ways, but I think the show expects us to find his personality intrinsically sympathetic in a way that it mostly isn't nowadays and probably shouldn't be. And that's what really bothers me about him, I think.

This.

I rewatched a few years ago and it was cringe.

Not what I took from the show on seeing it first run. We were supposed to find him immature and a bit of a loser, which, yup.
