I'm currently working through the Judge Dee series.

In Tang era china a magistrate and his lieutenants solve crimes. Books follow his career from posting to posting.

Solid mysteries series, fascinating characters, well written, (although given that they were written in the 40's some of the language is a little dated) and the fact that they were written by an accomplished sinologist gives the books a feeling of authentic history. As it turns out they are based on a real life magistrate from the time.
