IA so much! It doesn't seem like this should be such a hard line to tread. Just want nice, normal, well-written mysteries with likable but not overly cutesy characters. Is that so hard?

For real!

Maybe this is why I like Murdoch Mysteries so much.

Not overly twee, he's not an alcoholic... sounds like a win to me.

I LOVE Murdoch Mysteries! Like, yeah, the characters' personal lives all have ups and downs, but never because they're just failures in that sphere. And Murdoch is bad at a lot of social stuff, but it's always clear that the people who care about him KNOW what his deal is and that while he's often stiff etc he's never purposefully cruel, they love him for who he is, and they work with him to get past any hiccups. Sometimes the writing gets a little soapy but at its core, like... everyone on this show is trying their best not only at their jobs but at their personal lives-- they accept that they are whole people and they want and work towards having whole lives.

And the main and supporting characters all support each other through their problems in a way that really hits that found family button...

(also it's the best show I've ever seen in terms of-- after s10, at least-- getting to see two autistic characters who are very different play off each other! I mean they can't say 'autistic' because the diagnosis doesn't exist yet, but...)

Pretty much! It's just ... nice and wholesome!

And the cast is great, both the permanent and recurring.

It's a little twee, but it works. The series is great

Authors aren't failing to write the mysteries you want because it's particularly hard. They're just writing the mysteries they want.
