The later seasons did devolve a bit, though, particularly when it came to Brian. A lot of the focus with him was his dysfunction in a lot of areas.

Oh definitely, I admit I only finished the series out of loyalty. It seemed to tail off once certain arcs (such as Jack's wife) were resolved. The cast changes were fine with me but the show was already on its way out by that point.

It also suffers from the issue that it's very old and male focused but the fact their boss was a younger woman didn't turn out to be as bad as you'd expect first reading that statement!

I really didn't like Gerry though, has to be said.

I was going to mention this myself. I still enjoyed New Tricks very much, but hated to see Brian going through that. :(
