i guess i'll never get it bc even if i do find some fans annoying, once i get enough space from them i genuinely stop caring about them and my irritation fades away.

I'm very glad that you have a brain that allows you to do this. not everyone does. for some people, a constant stream of negativity - even if you choose not to actively engage in the fandom but some of it still leaks into your space tangentially - isn't so easy to shrug off.

I dunno, depending on the fandom, it can get baaaad. I'm talking people sending you pictures of gore and dead babies or trying to get you fired from your job or harassing you to the point of suicide bad. Homestuck fandom messed me up. Fun fact: the young lady who attempted suicide because of bullying from the Steven Universe fandom? Her bullies followed her there from Homestuck fandom.

There was one particular anon sending people messages saying they deserved to be raped because because they were contributing to rape culture. Yet Mindfang, one of their pet faves, literally raped someone, unlike the male character they hated so much.
