C'mon, Riker grew into the role (and even then didn't have many stand out great episodes) but he only existed so they could have a kirk-lite style character in the show. He was a throwback. Safety bet from an insecure studio that wasn't sure about forgoing the "he-man macho" type hero.

And Kira... had her moments, but she also had FAR to many "Kira looking for badly written romance" episodes. So far I'm into season two, and I don't know how desperate Chakotey is for a shag. I don't think we made it 6 episodes without Kira on the hunt for cock.

And you know it wouldn't have been so bad, if not for the fact that Kira could not act those romance episodes worth a damn.

riker was more of a horn-dog than kirk ever was, so this is very strange reading of ToS on your part.

I dunno. I count, 3 romances from Riker. Not counting Troy.

Lets see, there was the woman on the planet where gender politics were reversed. The Female on the planet of the gender neutral, and I think there was one more.

Oh, and the time he was raped by the horny scientist who helped him escape, but I'm not counting that. That's over 7 series.

Riker ruled in every conceivable way after season 1

Kira was amazing in non-romance episodes so I'm willing to give her a pass on those

in conclusion, wow

Riker had, like, 2 good episodes. Other than that his job was to repeat what Picard said for the american fans who didn't want to root for a frenchman. He was a sidekick and little more. he wasn't a bad side kick, but he wasn't especially stand out either.

And Kira had, basically 3 epidosed types:

"I was a terrorist and now I'm struggling to deal with that" which were generally pretty great, I grant you.

"My stupid religion is making me do a stupid thing, but I'm going to stick with it no matter how obviously stupid it is" which I didn't like but at least it was consistent with her extremist character.

and the "I'm in love see how terrible I cant really be!" episodes. I hated those.

...

Oh and the "Look at me, playing a sexpot from another dimension even though I don't quite know what sexy is" episodes. I don't count them because they're not REALLY Kira, but they didn't make me like her any better.

judging characters primarily by their highlight episodes is just plain wrong IMO

No, I'm taking them as a whole. Kira was about even split between "Terrible / Meh / Great"

Riker was mostly Meh, with a couple of high points, and a lot of weird / off putting acting spliced in (He didn't learn to smile without looking alien for the first 4 seasons).

So far, 2 seasons in, Chakotey is Mostly Meh, with some notable high points (Belting that Marquis who was giving Tuvok a hard time. Resquing that alien kid and letting him earn his nae) and no cringey weirdness. Puts him, on balance, ahead of Riker and Kira.

Just wait. At least both Riker and Kira get characterization and lots of great moments later on. Chatokay basically remains flat throughout and is never really given much to do past season 3.
silverr: Dax looking incredulous (DS9_tribble)

okay.. I just...

Your takeaway from DS9 is certainly far different than mine.

I don't think we made it 6 episodes without Kira on the hunt for cock

Pfft. Check your math, and your facts.

Kira's first romance was Bariel, who didn't appear until 1.20. (TWENTY. Which is not equal to six.) Bariel was in 2 episodes of S1, 4 episodes of S2, and 2 or 3 eps of season 3. Kira and Bariel didn't get together til 2.16, almost an entire season after they met.

Her next romance was Shakaar, which was not portrayed on-screen and only mentioned in one or two very off-hand references.

Her final romance with Odo wasn't until the final seasons.

Riker always rubbed me wrong. I didn't like him.

Kira was okay, but I cans see where some wouldn't care for her.

I haven't seen too much of Star Trek: Voyager, but Chakotey seemed all right.
