What..... did you think people did with them

Not OP, but there’s a lot of emotional thrill and satisfaction to be gotten from reading smut, regardless of whether you masturbate to it or not.

For me the breakdown is something like this:

75% of the time: Smut is meh.
23% of the time: Smut is thrilling! Riveting! Emotionally fulfilling! But I’m not getting off to it.
2% of the time: Horny-hours smut.

I do find it a little funny that OP was surprised people get off on smut. But getting off is very much not the only reason people read smut.

A lot of fans seem to forget that this happens, that porn is for getting off to. Guess it's unladylike to admit you had anything more than a purely intellectual/emotional response to smut someone else deliberately wrote and shared with people.

I'm not really sure how that would be unladylike, but personally I read fic for the interaction between characters. It's fairly rare to find Gen fic, especially when it comes to the character dynamics I tend to lean towards, and either way, I love to explore the characters relationships beyond what canon offers, be it romantic or otherwise. It's fine when people only read smut for it's porn purposes, but there is a lot more to it than just that.

It seems really reductive to say that smut is for getting off to. Getting off is definitely one of the things smut is for, but it's also not the only thing.

Seems like you seem to forget other people have other experiences.

I mean, if I just want to get off, then I'll go watch some porn. When I read smut, it's because I'm interested in reading specifically about those characters and the relationship between them. Sometimes I really, really want to read some A/B, but the idea of reading C/D at that moment makes me go 'meh' even though I usually enjoy C/D.

Well most fic includes smut even when they aren't PWP. I read mostly for the character interactions and skip over most of the hot and heavy stuff. I figured that even when people read it for the smut they're still in it for the characters involved over what they're doing.
Like I don't even know really. I have a habit of overreacting and this is no different, but I'm not usually caught off guard like this, especially for something that should be obvious.
