Re: Fandom secrets you're too lazy to make...
(Anonymous) 2020-04-02 10:10 am (UTC)(link)To me that seems like such a low-key sexist response to a female character who demonstrates the intelligence, strength, and level-headed competence Roslin exhibits in the first few hours of the show. I just think she’s such an incredible portrayal of an imperfect but deeply competent political leader, and for him to be like, “Yeah but her tone” (especially given the real-world political landscape of 2020) really, really bothers me.
S!B - I probably shouldn’t be reacting to my friend’s opinion on a fictional character like it’s a major red flag.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-02 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)I get it. Sometimes it bothers me when others are uncharitable toward characters, and then don't seem to realize their reasons why. Yeah, even though it's their right to have whatever opinion they have, and they don't have to justify it to anybody for any reason.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-02 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)You might be giving this character too much of a break if you're really going to compare her to the political climate of today... (which most people watch shows to actually get away from that) Hell, the cops from Twin Peaks would actually look competent compared to the horrible nonjustice going on today, but I still hate basically every last one of them regardless.
Disclaimer: I haven't even watched the show you're talking about, but don't assume you're friend's sexist because they aren't gushing over some character like you want them to be.
Re: Fandom secrets you're too lazy to make...
(Anonymous) 2020-04-02 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)I don't care that he's not gushing. But when someone doesn't at least respect a female character who is demonstrated to be incredibly competent and capable, because "the way she talks to people is annoying," I can't not see that as sexist.
Furthermore, the show very clearly demonstrates that she speaks to people exactly the way she needs to, in order to have them listen, understand, and do what needs to be done for them all not to die. I mean, the fact that she is able to speak to people in a way that makes them listen is what saves all 50 thousand remaining humans, and that is very much a part of the narrative. So a tone argument feels like really warped priorities.
Huh.
Hearing people's arguments on this has just made me realize that, no, it really does bother me a lot that he thinks about female characters this way. Because I suspect it reflects how he thinks about real life women too.
