Li Shang could be his ex-military guide taking him somewhere dangerous to look for some artefact.

Li Shang gazed out the window as the sounds of sparring trainers and trainees filled the gym behind him. He gazed sternly, of course, as was tradition, his back straight and proud - even as weight of the long day defending the honor of Fuschia Town bore down on him.

As it did every day. As it had upon every first son of his family, the long chain of Gym Leaders all the way back to antiquity.

Many of the kids cried, of course. Wailed. Especially after demanding a real battle and having their precious Pidgeys get steamrolled by his team of Machokes and Hitmonlees. But, Shang thought, it was a good learning experience. Pokemon could be dangerous. Pokemon in the wild wouldn't have mercy like a trainer would. Type differences ceased to matter at high enough power differentials.

And living right next to the Safari Zone, most of those rambunctious kids could use a reminder of that.

Shang allowed himself to relax a fraction as the sun began to set over the trees to the north. At least the day was almost over. He could hear the trainers behind him beginning to wind down and pack up. The Gym's official hours would be over in about ten minutes, then he'd remain here with his team for another half hour cleaning up, and then -

Then, there, down the path to the gym, came what clearly was to be the latest challenger. Shang stifled a sigh. Gangly scrawny kid, check. Nerd glasses, check. Wearing a dumb sweater clearly given to him by his mother, check. Nose buried in a Pokedex and followed by a rather aggravated-looking Rattata and Diglett, check.

And who, of course, missed the sign on the path by being too busy staring at his Pokedex screen, and instead came right up to Shang's window, acted completely surprised that the window and Shang behind it had appeared out of nowhere all of a sudden, nearly dropped everything he was holding in surprise, then began gesturing frantically at the gym behind him. And talking.

Shang stared at the kid for a moment, looked pointedly at the closed window for a moment, then gave up and pulled the window open a little when it became clear the kid wasn't about to stop.

"-Thatcher and hi, yes, hello, opening that was probably a good idea, huh? I um, just started this Pokemon journey thing - "

"What," said Shang.

"Yeah! I finally just got the license for this - they lost my results - for years - can you believe - "

Shang hauled the window open a bit further, ducking down to make sure he was seeing what he thought he was seeing. Glasses, check. Sweater, check. Gangly teen looking thing, check. Clutching desperately at a Pokedex and now a couple of books, check.

Except upon closer look, this "kid" was like thirty years old, what the fuck.

A sharp chirp from the Rattata made the kid - man? - jump. "Right, yes, hi! Hi." And Shang found himself now gazing down - sternly - at the guy gazing up at him with big, hopeful eyes. "I er, meant to ask, is this place still open?"

"No," said Shang.

"Oh," said the 30-something kid-man-guy-thing. "I'll... um, come back tomorrow?"
