104. I think I need to know who Todd Rungren is, this very minute.

108. Hold on now, what video is this from? I don't remember him ever being attacked by people in blue uniforms in any of the AVGN-videos...

116. Those posters make me insanely curious. Are they of the same movie? Or remakes in different languages? Are the characters in the french children replaced by adults in the english, or are they the same characters who have aged? These questions, I must have answers to them.

126. Oh man, Gears of War slash. I wonder why that thought... simultaneously DOES surprise and doesn't surprise me. Having been on the internet I KNOW that people will ship anything, but so rarely seeing ship-stuff for supposedly serious, beefy shooters makes it kind of surprising when I actually DO come across it!

And regarding your desire to see slash, well... you have my sympathy OP, but I'm afraid that's the most you'll ever get. While something like TF seems to garner lots of slashy attention for some reason, I'm afraid GoW just won't strike anyone's fancy that way. Even if I hear that comfort-fic would be happening after the end of 2...

164. But but this is shonen! Certainly all obstacles can be overcome with friendship and hard work and effort, right? Right?

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
TF has a different aesthetic that's generally more women-friendly. Since women are the ones writing slash, attracting women means attracting slash. The fact that it came in The Orange Box only helped that, I think.

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. The aesthetic in question, would you say it's the aesthetic of the graphics, design and presentation or the game mechanics themselves? I really am curious as to where and how this explosion of slash between men who... really AREN'T, as the OP here writes, 120-pound waifs with silver hair came from!

Like, is it the old clichee of "women prefer team-work games to single-player gorefests" etc in action or is it more a question of how the game looks? Or maybe both?

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it has a lot to do with how the game looks and how it was marketed. Yes, it's an FPS, yes it's got an all-male cast, but the cast isn't made up of 300 pound beefcakes with railguns, the whole game hasn't been run through grey filters to make it look grungy, and the way that it was presented to the audience was as something kind of humourous and lighthearted, for a game where you have to shoot people up. Gears of War, on the other hand, proudly totes itself as another in a long line of games of its kind, all of which have been culturally labelled "FOR BOYS".

I think just going back and looking at advertisements for Gears of War and games like Gears of War would show a lot, but it seems like every year we get one or two new games that are basically presented as "A guy in armor shoots things."

Oh yes, I see what you mean. And I am also struck by how diverse the characters of Team Fortress look like compared to the others. They are all very generic designs, bulky men in armor designed to appeal to those who like bulky men in armor, with very little color and differing characteristics inbetween them. Large, diverse and colorful casts is something that ALWAYS gets my creative centers flowing (part of the reason I am unreasonably in love with almost all of ArcSys fighting games) and start thinking "What if character x and y met up and did this and that", and I can see now how Team Fortress's cast, with it's different builds, different colors and roles to play could spark creativity more than "Game X featuring Identical Man in Armor 245 and his 5000 clones".

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly! I also think that showing the face tends to help, and that the generally different aesthetic in PUSHING the game helps. For example, Half-Life features Guy In a Suit Killing Bad Things, BUT, compare and contrast the poster:

http://haranded.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/wallpaper_half-life_2_01_1280.jpg

It also helps that he's not bulky, I guess, but Gordon Freeman on the whole seems like much more of an individual and stands apart from the others.

Re: Link list to illustrate my point

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2008-11-22 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. Feels a lot more... serene than many other posters. Less focus on bulk and crowbar-ing grotesque slimethings as it seems to be on the environment and how out of place Gordon seems to be in this desolate, but not entirely grey and bland city. There's not a lot of action going on in the poster, so it speaks to a very different mindset than the other posters end up doing.

Although I must admit that now, I find it slightly humorous that despite having several more games to his name than the TF-dudes, Gordon has markedly less fic about him. Or slash. Or gen. Or anything. Good old mute protagonist. How I dislike them.

Too lazy to log out of rp

108. It's from 'Piece of Meat', a britney spears spoof video he makes a cameo in.

Here ya go! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6krCnZFXuM)

in re 116 (sorry RP journal >.>)

[identity profile] i-canread.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah; the one on the left is the original French version, the one on the right is the English variation. The story follows the two from childhood to adulthood~ Did that help?

Re: in re 116 (sorry RP journal >.>)

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Aah, got it! That does make sense: the English version probably chose to focus on them as adults to draw an adult crowd, then. I was curious since the two posters were so different yet still similar.

Re: in re 116 (sorry RP journal >.>)

(Anonymous) 2008-11-22 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
No, they're the same movie. The movie shows the two characters throughout various stages of their lives, spending a significant amount of time on them when they're children but later showing them as adults. It's the same movie.

The English version is the international poster version of that film. It's probable that the version with the children is also just an alternative poster in France because it is very misleading.

I am totally disappointed by the popularity of TF over GoW as a fandom. Seriously... the fact that they have titles instead of names is weird enough...
