I mean the internet is a very easy place to escape from. Unlike in real life where you have to deal with these kinds of people everyday, on the internet you can literally just exit out and not return. Yeah it isn't nice, but it isn't the same thing as knowing and living with someone who actively has it out for you, who wants and purposefully makes your life hell. There are near an infinite amount of places you can disappear to and live your fandom life in if you actually look for them.
The difference with the internet is that most judgement is superficial, and entirely based on what you publicly put forth and attest to. If it bothers you that much you can walk away, or edit what you let people know about you. There are too many people on the internet and too many people with hangups to search down every last person with a differing opinion, and most of these people making threats are just children trying to make a point by being as inflammatory as possible. So yeah.

DA - Yeah, this is my take as well. Like, at the end of the day all of this stuff is still pretty "so what?" I have sympathy for people who receive a lot of hostility online, and obviously no one should ever do any of that stuff to people.

But it's just mean strangers being mean. Making things up in their own minds about you, that only their rude, mean friends even halfway believe. So what?

I've had anons call me a pedo and tell me to kill myself. It's about as big of a deal as having a big, ugly black fly in my house.
