Thesaurus abuse.

I don't mind a fic with complex vocabulary, but sometimes it's obvious that the author substituted common words for "smart-sounding" synonyms that don't fit quite right and make everything sound silly.

For example: "Mr. and Mrs. Dursley of number four, Privet Drive, were triumphant to verbalize that they were masterfully commonplace, thank you very much."

"Mr. and Mrs. Dursley of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much."
