Disliking Sisko doesn't make you racist.

Disliking Janeway doesn't make you sexist.

Sisko is just Sisko. Not all black people. Janeway is just Janeway, not all women. I don't understand that last remark.

Sisko is the best captain, both in terms of being a well-written and fascinating character and generally making good calls.

Janeway is a great character, but arguably not a great captain. This said, many of her bad decisions are made because she was caffeine deprived at the time, making her the most relatable captain.

DA: That's a fair description. I dislike a lot of the calls she made. But she was also in an excruciating position that none of the other Captains were, for years, with no relief, so. Fraying at the edges is understandable.

True. Hence, highly relatable. Voyager was a very flawed show imo, but I loved what they did with her character.

I adore Sisko as well.

I wanted to like Janeway, but I felt she was poorly/inconsistently written. (I didn't like the way Mulgrew played her, either, but recently I've read that she was directed to act that way. Such a pity.)

Sisko was the BEST captain.

Voyager had a lot of promise and failed at fulfilling that promise, DS9 just got better with time, and Voyager got worse. I don't think it's sexist or racist to say these things.

Not liking Janeway is not being sexist. Writing a female character in authority as being as thoroughly obnoxious as Janeway is is what's sexist.

And I genuinely don't get why so many people don't like Janeway. I love Sisco too, and DS9 is my favorite show, but Janeway is my favorite captain. Sisco comes second. I have to wonder if we were watching the same show. Janeway is awesome.

yeah, same. this is the first I'm seeing so much Janeway hate and I'm boggled. for all of Voyager's flaws, Captain Mothrfukin Janeway is not one of them and I'm confused.

Some of my feelings about Janeway are influenced by knowing that Kate Mulgrew was pretty damn mean to a new cast member. Sometimes, knowing too much about the artist spoils the art.

When Jeri Ryan joined the show, Mulgrew assumed that the Big-Boobed Blonde was going to crowd her out of her scenes and... got a bit territorial.

I've read interviews from both her and Ryan confirming it, from their respective points of view, and seen a clip from a panel with Ryan discussing it. (Ryan was very civil, praised Mulgrew's acting skills, and... understood that Seven getting promoted so much ~did~ make things difficult for the other cast. The guy who played Harry Kim sitting next to her started crying halfway through. It was... difficult to watch.)
