M/m has never really clicked for me either (aside from a couple exceptions). Somehow nobody believes me when I say I feel lonely in fandoms because of it. Like, really? Have you seen the statistics? https://fanlore.org/wiki/AO3_Ship_Stats_2019

(Anonymous) 2020-04-08 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. A quick look at those and some of them are the ships I can't get invested in, big ones like Sam/Dean or Johnlock. I just don't care.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-08 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I like slash but it's very rare I like the main m/m juggernauts. I like a lot of the canons on that list but the only pairing on the list I actually give a shit about is Katsuki Yuuri/Victor Nikiforov.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-08 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
On second look, I'm actually genuinely surprised that Shiro/Keith didn't make the list. Huh.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-08 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay? Just because you don't like the particular ships listed here doesn't disprove the original point that m/m is massively more popular than anything else.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-08 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
??? That wasn't what I said at all. You misread.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-08 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh wow, look at all those fandoms I don't care about. I like m/m and have quite a lot of favourite m/m pairings, but I somehow never got into the popular stuff...And even if I happen to like a popular show or whatever, there's a 90% chance I won't like the most popular pairing. Such is my luck.

+1

Same.

I ship 10 out of the top 20 on that list and I believe you 100%. After liking those things, my other fandom interests are a bit like venturing out into a desert and not seeing anyone for days.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-08 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck do I know this feel.

I shipped two very popular pairings in two very prolific fandoms for twelve years straight. Then I got into a new OTP that's much, much smaller, and I am just not handling it well at all. I am not cut out for smaller fandoms. My brain cannot comprehend that I have read all the fic and there is no more fic to read. It's like, "But that was practically none! That was just a single little morsel of appetizer! What do you MEAN there is no more!!?"

(Anonymous) 2020-04-08 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Yep. I go to search tags because I want a specific thing and there is none of that, or any of the other things I really want to read. No active fan blogs. I still check but nothing ever updates no matter how many times I refresh.

Even worse is when people tag that fandom and I see it and feel hopeful... and it's for someone's headcanon about a character from another fandom because they're played by the same actor. It has nothing to do with my fandom at all.

I go to search tags because I want a specific thing and there is none of that, or any of the other things I really want to read.

God, this so much. I'm so used to there be multiples of literally every type of fic you can think of. Want some soulmate AU? There's ninety! Harry Potter fusion? Two hundred! One Bed fic? Road Trip fic? Fake Dating? Whatever you can think of, there's a minimum of several options to choose from.

To go from that, to a fandom where there isn't a single option for the vast majority of tropes, is like...fuuuuck, I am in the wrong neighborhood.

It's not that I think I'm entitled to any of this stuff. I'm just so used to it being there.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-09 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I get in moods to read about a pairing in a specific way like super slow burn romance or something light and funny, and if I could just find what I was looking for I'd be satisfied. I know this, because that's how it's gone before. I need my fix. Lol.

But for this fandom I'm obsessed with there's only pretty short fic, mostly based on canon events or slight deviations from them. I don't think anyone stuck with the fandom long enough to explore it or want to write it differently. There's nothing to sink my teeth into. It's like chewing custard. I am not satisfied.

I feel weirdly offended on behalf of these characters I fell in love with, because they're more interesting than a lot of the big pairings I ship. They deserve more attention and fandom love.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-08 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
same, i ship a few of the Big ones on that list, but the rest of the time my ships are tiny little things that have no fandoms to speak of. like there's 30 fics maybe and they're not always about the ships/characters i like.

it's very frustrating, lol.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-09 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. I've wondered if I could even get someone interested enough to write it in a rarepairs fic exchange or something.

I kind of want to put ads on AO3 just to try to entice people from the more popular tags to my unloved ones.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-09 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
I can't believe Adrien/Marinette made it into the top 20. And also genuinely surprised how high Malec is on that list, tbh. I didn't think the Shadowhunters fandom was that big.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-09 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
Shadowhunters has had a book series, a film, and a netflix series. I think that probably helped.

Eh, the ML fandom is fairly sizeable and the show is still running, and the Adrien-Marinette onscreen chemistry is honestly the only really interesting relationship - platonic or romantic - that is happening on it. I mean, it says SOMETHING when the majority of the ship wank doesn't happen between rival ships, but rivaling factions within the same pairing (Marinette/Cat Noir is wildly more popular than Adrien/Ladybug)

I'd say that it is weird that there's so little slash and femmeslash around for a show that has all but said out loud who the canon gay couples are, but there's so little going on with the secondary cast that honestly, I get it.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-09 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
tbh it kind of isn't outside of them, the next largest pairing is clace i think? and they have about 3000 works, which isn't teeny-tiny, but that jump down from about 21k is significant.

i think the only reason they're even at all popular is because they were actually textually gay, and in a fantasy show, which fandom kind of loves. fandom also loves a fixer-upper and by god did this show have many holes to fill, lmao.

also from a personal level i think their individual characters and relationship were really charming and sweet, so i can see that being enough to inspire people to write fic about them even if they don't care for the rest of the show.
