I completely, 100% understand this "only like canon ships" feeling. I didn't always like canon ships, because a lot of them are genuinely awful, but the popular non-canon ones rarely appealed to me.

Yeah, a lot of canon ships suck. But if your brain demands the ship be canon as a baseline for shipping it, then you find the good canon ships and ship those.

For me, Mulder/Scully was where it was at. They're actually a really slashy-feeling het ship, because for the first four years or so, the writers genuinely were not writing them as a canon ship. They were truly supposed to be platonic work partners. But then over time, popular demand wore the creators down and the ship became canon. So you get this very "slashy" flavor, where the narrative is just letting the characters be themselves and have whatever relationship they have, as opposed to the standard het narrative of constantly beating the viewer over the head with grade-school shit about how much they waaaant each other and how in loooove they are.

Unfortunately, once the writers decide to give in to popular demand and write them as a canonical ship, things went down hill. Derp.
