They're actually a really slashy-feeling het ship, because for the first four years or so, the writers genuinely were not writing them as a canon ship. They were truly supposed to be platonic work partners. But then over time, popular demand wore the creators down and the ship became canon. So you get this very "slashy" flavor, where the narrative is just letting the characters be themselves and have whatever relationship they have, as opposed to the standard het narrative of constantly beating the viewer over the head with grade-school shit about how much they waaaant each other and how in loooove they are.
Unfortunately, once the writers decide to give in to popular demand and write them as a canonical ship, things went down hill. Derp.
