For real, the responses kinda threw me, but honestly the secret is written in a way that's kind of difficult to understand. Hell, maybe I don't understand it! But I think I get what you mean, OP.

A particular female character sprung to my mind from a fandom I passively keep up with. Her fans will admit her writing is garbage, but they're also just as quick to claim internalized misogyny or that you're just trying to get her out of the way of the more popular slash ship if people who are not fans of hers voice their complaints.

It's like you're supposed to love her despite the writing and the only reason you don't is because misogyny according to them? It's bizarre.

I can think of at least a couple of fandoms where it might be true that people claiming bad writing as a reason they dislike a female character might ring hollow—because all the characters are badly written, and yet somehow, they love the male characters but never the female ones.

da

So many people willing to admit sexism is a widespread problem yet so few willing to admit that this results in writers being bad at creating good female characters even if the same writers can create excellent male characters.

+1

if the female characters are genuinely written terribly while the men aren't, then i will 100% direct my ire at the creator, because it's their job to write decent or fun characters and if they can't write half the population well then what the fuck frankly.

but lets face it, 90% of the time it's a canon where all the characters are fucking flat and one-note but only the women are getting any flack for it.

I definitely see this in one of my fandoms. The overall writing... is not great. The male characters aren't written any better than the female characters are, and yet somehow it's the female characters who get all of the hate while the male MC (who I found way more stereotypical and grating than any of the women) gets love because he can easily be slashed with two of his male friends.

Literally nothing about this is true, but good for you if you want to "100% direct your ire at the creator." I, meanwhile, will blame the creator AND hate the female characters at the same time because there's no obligation to love a shitty character as compensation for their bad writing. because THEY'RE NOT REAL.
