I think if fic writers don't know how something that actually exists works, they should probably do basic research, use a modicum of logic or common sense, or not include it in their fic. Vagueness only works to a point for some things. But I am okay with them using canon-based science, law, politics, etc., which I know seems like a contradiction since sometimes dramatic license means research, common sense, and logic get left by the wayside in canon. If it doesn't work the same as in reality or canon, give me a reason - a bizarre loophole, the character has a poor understanding, someone is manipulating things behind the scenes, solar flares, it's not real, it's magic, whatever, just something.
