You are right, like when something exists for long enough the writers and directors might change/get bored, and decide to do things with their characters that is not what they (the characters) would do ever. If it's part of an ongoing series I where they keep up this characterization, I'd probably have to accept it as part of their characterizations, though I would only search for fics an the like before the creators decided to toss their characterization in the trash... but in this case...

Karen Traviss' Halo trilogy is exactly what you mention of disregarding canon personalities. The name of the author alone should give you enough red flags to cover a stadium. The books butchered personalities and disregarded previous canons for the prejudices of a woman that says a canon should fill a pamphlet, and that does not even fucking read books.

Ohh~ Now yeah, this is a problem. It's like giving me Star Trek: 2009 flashbacks here... That is bullshit. Yeah. Unfortunately you just didn't get the excuse that the characters actually somehow existed in an AU... Which, ouch. Yeah, I get why you'd want to disregard all of that... It literally pains me to see the 2009 cast for Star Trek because they literally spit in the face of everything Gene Roddenberry meant for his series. To have someone like that to take over Halo, and just assume these characters... ugh, I can't even imagine...

I get mad enough when fandom (which I've made plenty clear in my previous rant;;) ignores canonical character traits for ease of access, but seeing that from the people in charge is purely infuriating!
