I didn't like Tom and Jerry either, but mainly because it was so boring to me.

I agree completely, OP. I feel the same about Tweetie and Sylvester. Felt the same as a kid. I always rooted for Tom. Jerry was a jerk and deserved to be eaten.

I really did not like Jerry. Tweety, either. I wanted so bad for the both of them to be eaten by the respective kitties.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt this way

I remember seeing all the Loony Tunes as a kid, and mostly not being really happy with the 'underdog' always being beaten. I rooted for Wile E Coyote in the Roadrunner 'toons, and for Sylvester, and for Tom. I just don't like it when one character *always* loses, no matter what.

You are not alone, OP.

Cats in animation are/were often treated unfairly.

This is because Walt Disney hated cats and everybody else copied him. They couldn't even make the Aristocats until after he died.

I liked the old Looney Tunes because, growing up, it was all I had to watch other than Hannah/Barbara's moronic crap. I find them completely unwatchable now. Old cartoons just suck.

I love you for calling HB moronic crap!! It totally was!

(Anonymous) 2020-04-11 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
lol, it was pretty mindless drivel.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-11 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel the same, OP. I always wanted Jerry and Tweety Bird to be eaten. I found out my mom felt the same way. We love cats.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-11 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I followed what the narration was pushing as a child. It was only when I grew up that my sympathies swung over to Tom.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-11 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's silly. Tom is just being a cat, and the just-being-a-cat action of trying to catch a mouse is something that's beneficial to humans, yet he's framed as the bad guy and roundly punished, not only by the mouse trying not to get eaten, but by the humans whose house he's trying to keep free of pests??

And Jerry is SADISTIC in some episodes. If he was just trying to avoid getting eaten and Tom was hoist by his own petard, that would be fine, though I still wouldn't enjoy watching it, but like... in a lot of the cartoons he goes to great lengths to cause excess pain and humiliation? It's weird and I find it honestly sickening to watch.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-11 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
On top of that, Jerry was a massive dick. He was always starting shit and going out of his way to be mean to Tom. Tom was just reacting. There were even a few episodes where Tom flat out refused to chase Jerry, so Jerry turned the dickery up to 11 until Tom said "fuck it" and started trying to kill him.

What a garbage cartoon.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-12 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I understand OP. I can't watch any movie or TV show where an animal gets hurt. The logical side of my brain knows that they aren't really getting hurt and are fine but my emotions are screaming hysterically NOOOOOOOOO. I have left more movies than I care to count if I see an animal get mistreated.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-12 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
same. humiliation kink is just not my jam and that's what these cartoons seemed to be.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-12 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Now I want to write a humiliation kink fic starring tom and jerry.

yeah i really don't like it when characters are provoked into their own humiliation or punishment and they are no worse than their counterpart. no thanks.
