Oh for sure. Like... some 'problematic' ships COULD build a healthy relationship if they had the right circumstances to do so under... but if I'm into that ship, it's probably NOT because I want to see them with white picket fences and a golden retriever.

It used to drive me up the wall in one old fandom when everyone was a fan of a ship between two undeniably fucked up and dangerous characters, neither of whom is the type to compromise, who had all sorts of room for interesting deep problems and messed-up power dynamics, and the fandom content was overwhelmingly fluffy and well-adjusted. Even when a fic acknowledged that they were bad people who did bad things, no one seemed interested in exploring the dynamic between them as anything other than (frankly OOC) happy husbands.
