I mean to be fair, the whole point of Emma's character arc is that initial wanting to punch her in the throat is a understandable reaction.

Exactly. It's one of the reasons it's one of my favourite books. Emma is a REAL (figuratively of course) person. She does what she wants and even though she thinks that she's "helping" or doing the right 90% of the time, in reality she's being selfish and manipulative and sometimes cruel, and eventually she learns that.
