isn't it yow-ee? that's the only way i've heard people pronounce it.

Japanese doesn't use dipthongs between its morae, so you pronounce each morae in a word. Yow-ee Anglicizes it because it puts a dipthong into the yao, making it yow instead of ya-oh.

Correctly said, it should be ya-oh-ee.

I'm from NY where we all talk pretty fast so I'm kind of prone to just squish words into as few syllables and cut off letters from the end of words whenever I can. A lot of fandom folks comment on it and just wont make the effort to fix myself on it.

Hell, it's surprising I even say "yow-ee" rather than finding a way to shorten that, too!

Except even Japanese native speakers saying it in normal conversation will speak in such a manner as to have it come out as a diphthong, so I really don't see how English speakers pronouncing it "yowee" is a bastardization of the language.

Come back to me when we start tackling, "Nuh-GOY-uh" for "Nagoya" and we'll talk...

See, in this case, I think "yowee" isn't the right pronunciation because our "ow" is /au/ in the International Phonetic Alphabet as opposed to the actual /ao/ sound that should be present, but we don't have that diphthong in our sound vocabulary, so we approximate.

I disagree with the anon completely, though when it comes to diphthongs. Unless a word is spoken or sung syllable by syllable, then diphthongs are present in the language.

I don't know... I've actually asked my Japanese friend about this: how "yaoi" is pronounced & whether which of the two is correct.

She said that both are fine, since it depends on where you're from & what accent you have.

/shrugs/

But it's normally pronounced "ya-oh-ee." Tokyo accent, I think.
