I do have several Japanese friends, and they assure me that it's very, very close to "yow-ee" (though English is my second language, so I'm not sure; maybe it should be "yaow-ee"?). The "oi" sound often sound like "oy", but not in this particular word.

Yes. I understand the correct pronounciation, which is as you've described it. I just wasn't sure if the slurred casual version would sound like 'oy' or not though. Thank's for clearing that up for me.

Yeah, I didn't know either, which is why I asked, haha. I've also never heard an American try to pronounce the word, so I may have misunderstood the original complaint.
