Oh, for fuck's sake! Say "Yaoi" fast. Now say "Yowie" slow. Geez.... I wonder what you think about those of us who don't speak standard American English if you're getting pissy about the pronunciation of a foreign word.

I keep trying this, and my "fast yaoi" keeps coming up "ya-owee". When it gets really fast, it turns into "ya-wee", with this weird drop in my throat where the 'o' is supposed to be.

Personally, not buying the "just talking fast" thing, but, personally, not really caring either.

That's because it's noooooooooot how it's pronounced, even when spoken quickly.

But then again, OP or other anon, you may have the misfortune of having ANY FUCKING CLUE about how Japanese is pronounced.

Unlike every other bloody weeaboo on this comm, it would seem.

Do the Japanese even have a set pronunciation of the word?

Besides, most of us still say "anuh-mae", even though we do know that it's pronounced "ah-nee-meh". It's the fucking weeaboos who get so butthurt over the pronunciation of the word (when it's not anywhere close to their native language to begin with) that piss me off.

Hey, I enjoy anime. I enjoy yaoi (sometimes). Leave it that.

Of course they do! Japanese is not like English where the writing has little to do with pronunciation. Japanese is pronounced the way it's written. Well, in the case of hiragana and katakana, at least; kanji have several readings. Yaoi is written with ya o i, so it should be pronounced with those letters. I really don't understand why many Americans have so many problems with pronouncing Japanese - just learn how the letters are pronounced and apply it to every Japanese word. It's not that difficult, is it?

It actually is rather difficult for those of us who grew up speaking English and only English. Our pronunciation is nowhere near concrete, and fluctuates very easily, depending on what sound is placed where in a word. We'll either shorten a syllable or elongate it depending on what comes next. Add into that mess silent vowels and we're in a whole heap of trouble when we're trying to pronounce words from a language that has a strict pronunciation for each sound, and each sound has the same length.

Don't assume that everyone has the same knowledge as you, kiddo. And don't go around trying to convert everyone to whatever, just because you're "smarter" than they are. It only makes you look like a douchebag.

Thank you, but I would rather not waste my precious time learning the pronunciation rules of a foreign language just to properly say a word that has no bearing on my life and that I rarely use to begin with. I actually have enough trouble keeping up with Spanish, which is a slightly more relevant language for most US citizens.

But even then I wouldn't suggest that they learn the language's pronunciation rules to get an idea of how to say 'Mexico' correctly, let alone an obscure word that would be used to describe something containing anal sex between two fictional males.
