I'm no metal expert, but there are lots of subgenres of metal. I googled and found out that Nightwish and Blind Guardian are considered symphonic metal, so...maybe that's it?

Yeah, seconding this. It's the term I use whenever someone needs me to talk about What Kinds Of Music Do You Like. ("Symphonic goth metal" if you want to be more evocative about it.)

Also, OP, if you haven't heard them already, you've gotta go check out Within Temptation.

LOVE Within Temptation!

Oh boy, I do hope this turns into a music rec list for metal music :D

Yes!

I discovered a fun new group the other day. Brothers of Metal sing stuff based on Norse myths and sound pretty awesome.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-16 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm must check them out. Putting in a word for Corvus Corax, Germanic mediaeval metal

You can be a fan of symphonic metal without being a fan of death metal, it's not much more complicated than that.

Not all rap fans like all rap, not all rock fans like all rock, pretty simple to explain to people

I dunno...listen to Rush?...

Symphonic metal. You also may like adjacent genres like folk metal.

I dig a lot of metal subgenres, though I'm by no means an expert; I tend to like metal + something else. Like Epica and Nightwish, or Zeal & Ardor (black metal + chain gang songs) or Bloodywood (metal + Bollywood) or Gloryhammer and Alestorm (metal that is very, very silly).

My current jam is Riverside; you might like them if you're into epic melodic stuff.

Might be off the beaten path, but a lot of the stuff I like is in some way related to grunge? Not necessarily pure grunge, but grunge-influenced, like Three Days Grace or Red.

Symphonic(Epica, Nightwish) and power (Blind Guardian, Sabaton) metal, although they blend a lot. They are definitely on the "fun" side of metal.

You might like stuff like Dio, Powerwolf, Therion, Kamelot, Hammerfall, Within Temptation, Sonata Arctica, DragonForce, just to name a few.

also going to throw in a rec for Avantasia, Edguy, Vision Divine, & Leaves' Eyes, and definitely seconding Sonata Arctica & Within Temptation

I'm adding Amaranthe to this. Very similar to Nightwish and Within Temptation.

Often overlooked: Edenbridge!

It sounds like you enjoy symphonic power metal -- that's my favorite too. And it's okay to be a metal fan who gravitates toward one specific subgenre! It doesn't make you any less valid of a metalhead. \m/_( >_<)_ \m/

Band Maid might be worth a listen, if you can get past the maid costume thing.

There's no one way to be a metal fan, because there are a lot of subgenres of metals and they can be very different from each other. I don't listen to much other than prog, power, symphonic, & alternative, but I'd never consider myself not a metal fan. (i'm also very picky about what bands i like even in those genres lol. we all just like what we like)

btw here's a good video showcasing various styles of metal, including the bands/styles you like, if you want to get a feel for what the differences are & also a good list of bands in each genre:
https://youtu.be/NiXbz2rXzFA
(definitely check out the gothic, power, folk, progressive, & symphonic sections if nothing else o7 )

That video is really cool! Thanks for that!

(Anonymous) 2020-04-16 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
seconding everyone who said symphonic and power metal might be your thing? if you like blind guardian, you might like gloryhammer! their music is really cheesy (which may or may not be something youre into) and really fun. based on you liking nightwish, id also recommend within temptation, if you havent heard of them before

(Anonymous) 2020-04-16 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
lmfao I somehow scrolled past the multiple comments recommending within temptation already, i guess i was just excited to suggest them because theyve been one of my favorite bands for ages

I'm obsessed with Gloryhammer. They're hilarious.

Beelzebubs!

(Anonymous) 2020-04-16 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
If you want a comic strip that's famous all over Europe, please Google Beelzebubs.
It's a loving tribute/parody of European death metal and its surrounding subculture.
It's also hysterically funny.
Please try it out OP.
