"Empaths"

(Anonymous) 2020-04-15 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I should know better than to pay attention to stupid Facebook crap but WTF is up with people claiming to be "empaths"?? They're not claiming psychic powers, as far as I can figure. They're claiming to be super sensitive to other peoples' feelings and moods and therefore veeeeery special people and I'm like... good for you? IDK. I'd be more impressed by this claim if it weren't consistently posted by some of the most self-centered people I know.

Wow. It is called empathy, something all people should have. It doesn't make you special and you using it to turn the attention back on you is narcissistic and weird. Yup, that's just...no.

NAYRT

There are definitely people who seem to talk about empathy not as, like, the normal human emotional thing and more as a kind of emotional ESP to an extent that seems majorly supernatural and woo-y

that is both weird and disturbing to me.

My cousin does this and it's super weird. She's struggling with depression and self medicating with pot and I figure this is her way of trying to feel special. But I don't engage.

No, not all people have it or should have it. All people should care about others and treat them well, but you don't need to feel what they feel (in other words, have empathy) in order to do that.

Sounds like some cult leader shit.

Beware of Julio Morell, Melissa Barberer, and Karin Beth Gerber on Facebook. All three of them claim to be empathic but they aren't, and use their mental illnesses to be assholes.

it's ppl who are so up their own asses they try to make themselves seem ~special or ~unique so they can seem more interesting i guess?

ironically they're nearly always massive self-centered dicks. curious.

Oh yeah, I actually recall acquaintances claiming such things a few years back. I was like "...you're Deanna Troi?" But yeah, I notice people who display it like a banner seem to have trouble in that area. Especially if they perceive anyone with a dumb inconvenient problem to be getting in the way of their fun, to any degree.

Don't get me wrong, everyone's human and only has so much energy in a day to deal with shit, but this is why I don't really care for labels. You have to live up to labels.

Unfortunately some people who have experienced severe abuse in childhood exhibit hypervigilance when it comes to other people's emotional states. I'd urge anyone who comes across this woo woo hippy crap online not to outright mock the person saying it. They may just not have better terms to explain it.

I didn't until I was in my 20s. I just knew that I couldn't be in the same room as someone who was in a bad mood. It didn't matter if the anger wasn't directed at me, because that was never a guarantee that it wouldn't be taken out on me.

I do pick up on things before other people quite often, but it's only because I'm constantly observing people and I can't switch it off. No psychic powers here. It's exhausting and I hate it.

Also there are plenty of people who are just plain way more perceptive to that sort of thing than others even without any abuse or whatever in their background. One of my friends is like that - she can tell whenever someone is in a bad mood even if they don't say anything. She's just extremely good at being able to pick up on other peoples' emotional states.

I think there's a difference between actually being hypersensitive to emotions, and being the person who believes they are while going around pretending it's a badge (it ain't. As you pointed out, constantly being in that state sucks ass).

Yep. I'm an empath and that's why and it's awful. It's a self-preservation mechanism that's difficult to switch off, and I'd much rather never have needed that skill.

I haven't seen any real people claiming to be empaths, but there was a Tumblr rant about how Frozen 2 was a bad movie because "it retconned the point of Elsa in the first movie, which was that she was an empath." I was... really confused.
