FFXIV

I just finished the main storyline of Shadowbringers, and goddamn. Goddamn, what a good expac. The entirety of Amaurot was amazing, the dungeon being some of the best storytelling setpieces I've ever seen in my life.

I'm still kind of sitting on it and absorbing my feelings, but I just... love everyone so much. I love that good people do bad things for the right reasons, I love that bad people do good things for the wrong reasons, Emet-Selch is a truly incredible villain and Ardbert is my precious son. Someone please give Alisaie a hug.

Emet-Selch is the single most well-written villain I have encountered in a piece of fiction to date. I cried over him for almost ten minutes because even though it had to end that way, it still felt so awful. Beating him didn't feel like a victory at all, it felt like we were putting him out of his misery and just... his last words and that little smile... ugh. A real punch to the gut.

Right up until the very end I had no idea if he was gonna do a face-turn, and even though he technically didn't, I still felt so badly for him. Like, it doesn't excuse the whole mass genocide thing, but just... idk. I feel like he really wanted to be convinced. And he wasn't, and it was the final straw that broke his back. It was heartwrenching.

I was desperately hoping he would, even though I knew he wouldn't because he'd dedicated himself so thoroughly to his goal that at that point I think he didn't know how to exist without it. It honestly felt like he was on a suicide mission at that point - that he knew how it was going to end and didn't care. And yeah, I do think he really did want to be convinced, and then had his hopes crushed and then just went "screw it" because he was sad and tired and didn't want to keep fighting.

I've never cried over a villain like that before but I just could not stop bawling.
