My family doesn't really ask about my reading choices, so they don't really know what I read. They know I read a lot of manga, but they don't know that most of it is BL. I've never thought to tell them 'cause yeah, I think they'd side-eye me a little. My friends know though and they don't give a shit.

This isn't weird though? Like the majority of people who read m/m are women, so I highly doubt anyone would look twice at your literary choosings. I mean I totally get it though, I hate it when my brain tells me that something I like/do/say is going to be taken the wrong way, or is terrible in some way... It sucks.

Try not to to sweat it too much if you can! As long as you're enjoying yourself that's what matters!

It's true that most mm romance writers are women, but it's not mainstream knowledge. It's very taboo, for some reason.

Tangent: I'm friends with some romance writers, and they tell me Amazon is their best option (because their books almost exclusively sell in the Amazon Unlimited deal), so I buy their books for my Kindle app on the phone. Otherwise, I absolutely avoid Amazon because I loathe that company. I wonder if it's the best option for mm romance writers because buying these books with Amazon Unlimited means that they don't ever have to admit to anyone that they are spending money on mm romance and they don't have to defend their reading choices. Basically, husbands see Amazon Unlimited but not individual titles.

More tangent: I've been annoyed with how women's and girls' interests are always belittled and looked down upon. People always make fun of My Little Pony, of girl-horse and girl-friendships and romance stories. They're seen as stupid. Meanwhile, Transformers got a badass movie trilogy (with thin and ridiculous plots), and superhero franchises keep getting bigger - toxic masculinity abound. And people eat them up, analyze them until they seem a lot deeper, explain away any flaws.

"They" being the readers, not the writers. The readers can download these books as part of the Unlimited deal and no one ever has to know what they are reading. So no one can make fun of their choices or side-eye/judge/disapprove/take away their spending money. It's a sad fact that a lot of women still depend on other people's money.

Yes, exactly. Like, in the fandom/slash world, yeah, it's well known that it's mostly women who are into m/m, but not in society at large. I think most people would find it pretty weird.
