It is a habit that has been ingrained into a few generations of Americans.

Yeah, I remember having teachers talking about black characters in books by saying they were African-American unless the book specifically said they were from another country or something. None of them ever said the character was black.

new to this thread

I know, and it's so weird. As a kid, a friend from middle school once said they didn't like being called African-American because they weren't from Africa, and I think that's always been in my subconscious so I've always just said black, because as the secret points out, not all black people are African-American.

+1

Completely this.

One of my best friends in elementary school used to rage about this, because people would call her African-American. Even at the time she would yell at people that her entire lineage was Jamaican, so for the love of god either call her Caribbean-American or just call her black, because it's not like black is a bad word. I think about her every time I see stuff like this, haha. I hope you're doing good, Mika!

I wouldn't say it's weird, but rather inaccurate or just plain wrong.

I've never been happy about "black" sliding into politically incorrect territory. It's not an insult or ever meant as one. It's like how I'm so tired of my friends avoiding calling me a Jew. It's what I am. It's not a slur. It's offensive to me that it would be considered a slur.

Americans are so full of themselves they don't realize they aren't the entire world.

Yup.

hell, a good percentage of american black people aren't african-american as my people tend to mean it. but the conversation on respectful labeling was an angry one for USians, and nuance is not nearly as easy to disseminate, so people here understand labels for us on those lines.
