I also read a couple books by this author because someone recced them here and they're... okay, I guess? I don't know, it was fine, didn't knock my socks off in terms of plot. Mostly I thought well shit, if this author is making any kind of money writing this stuff I should try doing it, too. I didn't realize the bar was set so low when it comes to self publishing and still garnering an audience.

OP

I haven't really had the desire to read anything else by the author so this is the only one I've read. I don't think I thought it with this author because from what I remember her writing wasn't particularly bad compared to a lot of stuff I've read, but I've definitely read books that were awful and had that same thought that if they could write a book and make any money at all off it, then I should attempt it, too.

Oh, they're not bad, not at all. The writing is... serviceable? I don't recall many editing issues or problems with spelling, grammar or punctuation. Her sentences were grammatically sound. But the plot sort of plodded along... not in a bad way, just not in a page-turner sort of way. If I'd written something like this, I wouldn't have been upset with myself, but I wouldn't think oh, this is totally something bunches of people will want to read.

The Mrs. Muir way is best. She lived out her whole life and died from old age, and their spirits lived happily ever after. I've read a fic before where out of nowhere the living half of the relationship killed themselves to be with their ghostly other half, and since then (not often since ghost fic isn't exactly popular unfortunately) I get intensely uncomfortable when people end the human characters life (intentionally or in a 'happy' accident) because it's literally sacrificing their entire life for a romance.

(Obviously I'm overreacting here, so sorry about that)

OP

No, that's a really good point, and honestly, I didn't think about it that way. At one point I thought about writing fic and ended up deciding not to bother because no one's read this book, but if I ever change my mind, that's a really good way to go about it. Thanks. :)
