Because he strangled and sexually assaulted her, you mean?

Let me repeat again that I'm not defending McMurphy as a good guy, since apparently that's your only go-to move here. Ratched was a nurse, with a duty of care and intense power over the people in her care, who used that power in a deeply improper, harmful, callous, and ultimately evil way, and that's the reason that people don't like her.

And she did a lot of evil for a lot of people besides McMurphy.

This. There is not some rule where there can only be one awful person per movie. McMurphy is a terrible person. He's not a hero. TBH he's the reason I can't actually enjoy the movie. But Ratched is the one with the duty of care. And she harms more than just McMurphy. She's worse because she had a duty and breached it. She's worse because her patients put their trust in her as their nurse and she abused it with her evil actions.

No one is saying McMurphy is a good guy. No one. If anyone ever does, they are morons who haven't watched the movie. McMurphy is a bad guy too. But there is a reason Ratched is the villain and that reason isn't that she's a woman. The reason is that she's a nurse with a duty of care that she abuses. The reason is that she's worse.

You're not following here. Sure, Ratched is shitty, I don't really think anyone's ever going to say otherwise, but McMurphy is lionized and held up as the hero of the story, when in fact they're about equal. She takes an unfair proportion of the hatred that should be leveled at these characters principally because she's female and does bad things to men.

In another example, the drill sergeant in Full Metal Jacket is not shown even a micron of the hate that Ratched is, and he's directly responsible for the mental breakdown and violent suicide of one of his recruits. He is a bad person, he abuses his power in deeply improper, harmful, callous, and ultimately evil ways because he dislikes Gomer Pyle. And yet-- not even close to the same kind of vitriol aimed at Ratched. There is a reason for that. It is misogyny.

To the extent that there's anything sympathetic about McMurphy, it's entirely as a result of him (despite his many flaws and generally being a shitty person) being put in the situation of helping out a group of people who have been thoroughly brutalized by Ratched. The reality is that he is in a somewhat sympathetic role relative to McMurphy, even though he's a deeply shitty person, because he's in this fucked up situation largely created by Ratched. And I think to minimize the enormously shitty things that Ratched does because the mental health patients under her care are men is terrible.

Also, Full Metal Jacket is a terrible example here because no one is remembering the drill sergeant in the context of the full movie. No one remembers anything about that movie other than the one drill sergeant speech, and people remember that almost exclusively because it's a bravura performance from R. Lee Ermey. So it's just a ridiculous, ridiculous comparison. And even if that weren't the case, your argument would not demonstrate that people hate Ratched too much, just that people go too easy on the drill sergeant. Ridiculous. Nonsense.

Except McMurphy isn’t treated as a shitty person, at worse he’s seen as a lovable rogue like Han Solo.
