101. You've got some dirt, and that's better than nothing. Some people who'd also love to write some original stuff, me included, remain dirt-free. Start writing crap, know that it's crap, and let yourself suck as much as you want until you've got a first draft. THEN you can start getting picky. :) Good luck!

Most of the fanfiction I read frustrates me, because I want to read those authors in their own sandboxes. I am in awe of anyone who can play well in other's sandboxes - I'm stuck in my own, because I can never do anyone else's justice.

because I can never do anyone else's justice

I'm pretty sure you could, if you'd set aside self-doubts long enough to get the first few paragraphs down. Same as those fanwriters who fear going original.

As a fanwriter myself, I like the way that the burden of exposition is lightened. That's where I always stall out when I try to write my own stuff--I have no idea how much detail people need or want to get the idea where and how stuff goes on. How do you deal with that in your own writing?

thats what trips me up, too - and once youve decided how much background story to put in, how do you do it in a way that doesnt seem like just listing important points, and actually integrates smoothly into the story?
