107. Yeah, 'cause it totally matters why they want queers to have equal rights. Douchenozzle.

Yeah, it kinda does. I mean, granted, this secret is poorly worded and 90% likely to be trollbait, but I think it's important to note that people's motives *do* matter.

I mean, it's awesome if people want to support gay marriage. No doubt. But do you really think that the reasons behind people's actions should be considered irrelevant?

Consider an example: many ultra right-wing, anti-Semitic, conservative Christians are extremely pro-Israel. Why? Because they think that the creation of Israel will hasten the arrival of the End Times. If you were pro-Israel, this would probably disturb you. Sure, they might agree with you, but the *why* is important!

From a practical perspective, it is good that we have people supporting equal legal rights for homosexuals. But if the ultimate end goal is to have people truly and deeply respecting homosexuals, not as homosexuals, but as *people*, then the notion is a little troubling that someone who voted no on Prop 8 might have done so because they want Sam and Dean to get married and have buttbabies.

In short, supporting gay rights for the right reasons--i.e., because the queer among us are people too and deserve equal rights--is good, and not supporting gay rights is bad. Supporting gay rights for the wrong reasons--i.e, because you want to fetishize real-life people--is somewhere in between, but definitely not purely good.

Sorry, I'd also like to note that I don't think yaoi fans inherently fetishize gay men. A lot of them do, no doubt! But most of them don't, and I think this secret only applies to the (minority of) yaoi fans who only see homosexuality as a sexual fetish.

I completely agree that the secret (troll though it may be) was aimed at those yaoi fans who think gay men are actually shit-free teenage girls, only with hot sexy manmeat instead of those nasty snatches.

But I have to disagree with you about the rest. Yes, the ultimate end goal is to be seen and treated as people, not as perversions or kinks, but that's the kind of acceptance that can only come through visibility. Having gay friends, and neighbours, and co-workers. Seeing honest - not positive, not negative, but honest - portrayals of homosexuals in media. And marriage is a huge step toward that visibility.

Your Israel analogy was a good one, but it doesn't quite fit this situation. Hard-core Christians see the formation of Israel as a sign of the coming End Times, sure, but they also see world war and global toxification as signs. As an Israeli, I would be concerned to learn why those Christians had supported Israel, because I would want to know what-all crazy shit those Christians were going to pull in order to bring about the End Times. Hard-core yaoi fanbrats who think men can have buttbabies if they just love each other enough are going to buy a lot of really tacky merchandise, and embarrass themselves in public, and if it means I'm one step closer to being the legal equal of the rest of the population, I can deal with that for now.

It's not purely good that these brats voted for the reasons they voted, no. But it's, like, 99% good - they voted, and right now, that's all that matters.

Thanks for responding sanely. :) You've made me think.
