(I don't know anyone in fandom who thinks incest is a good idea either, but I've written and read a lot of that.)

You definitely have not seen some of the parts of fandom that I have. I've seen a lot of people arguing that, well, there's plenty of potential for consensual incest that isn't fucked up by power dynamics, and why should there be anything wrong with that?

That said, I have nothing against incest fic in and of itself, regardless of what some of its weirder fans may say, even if I do find most of it OOC.

*cough* I would be one of those people. I believe that incestuous relationships between cousins or siblings have plenty of potential for being healthy. I don't want to jump any of my siblings, but I can testify to the fact that we have no noticable power dynamic... nor do most of the siblings I know. And as to the "genetic mutations!!!!1" argument -- I think it's a truckload of shit. People with significant genetically transmittable diseases get married and breed every single day. Do I think that's irresponsible? Yes. That simply means that they should make the conscientious choice to avoid having children, not that they should be denied the right to marry. In my mind, the same goes for couples in incestuous relationships.

In the super-rare instances when two adult siblings do, for whatever reason, wind up fucking and happy about it, I'm not gonna try to break them up, for sure. I agree that the "genetic mutations" argument is bullshit on the small scale (on the large scale, it's a good argument, but that takes generations). But that's not the place I'm coming from.

The fact is, it is damned rare for siblings to get involved in a romantic relationship that does not wind up damaging one or both of them much more than a non-incestuous romance would. It's the nature of the intersections between family, friendship, and romance.

And in most societies, cousin incest is irrelevant to the discussion, as the relationship between cousins is usually vastly different than the relationship between siblings. When it isn't vastly different--when you grow up with your cousins as family members on a regular basis--that's when it becomes incestuous, and either the Westenmarck effect kicks in to prevent incest, or...sexual abuse happens.

As a biologist who specializes in genetics I have the need to put my two cents in. The problem is not one set of close relatives having a relationship, it is successive generations of a family inbreeding that will have a detrimental effect on the physical health of those born from such relationships, because the family's genetic code will decrease in variability.

As for the People with significant genetically transmittable diseases get married and breed every single day. Do I think that's irresponsible? Yes.
A) Several diseases don't show up until later in life, meaning that the person may already have a family. ie Huntington's
B)Why should having this disease have to rob them of more of their lives and choices? This decision depends greatly upon the disease. There is always a chance that a child will not have the disease. Especially if one of the partner's does not have a family history of it. Treatments and diagnostics improve every year.

Hahaha, I feel like I'm one of those people. |D I'd like to clarify: in fiction, because one can pick and choose how they want to portray a relationship, there is just as much potential for consentual incest that isn't fucked up by power dynamics and could be a good relationship as there is for nonconsentual, unhealthy, power-play incest -- depending on how the author wants to write it.

In real life, it's trickier, because it's hard to say whether it's really 90% of incest relationships do end up being unhealthy or if those are the ones that get the most attention in the media (and of course they would!). There is definitely potential for a healthy relationship depending on the people involved, but it is very, very easy for an incestual relationship to be unhealthy because of the inherent possibility of clinginess and/or power play dynamics. In that case, though, it's not the fact that it's incest that's the core problem, it's the fact that one of the people in the relationship is controlling or too unbalanced to be in a relationship like that (and honestly, if you're gonna force your sibling into something or have horrible fallout or throw fits if there's a breakup, you probably shouldn't be in a non-incest relationship either, because that's fucked up all across the board).

I think too much about stuff. ;;
