That's ridiculously judgmental of you. Because slashers slash in fandom, that must mean that they can't feel anything for people in RL? I used to be a rampant homophobe. I decided to try reading slashfic one day, to see how "gross" it would be, and you know what? Yeah, I turned into a slasher, and yes, that meant that I opened my eyes to the reality of things - that gay couples aren't "gross" or "weird," they love each other just like straight couples. Would you rather I not care, that other people not care? This cause is what I plan to dedicate my life to - you'd think less of me because I happen to be a little kinky? Seriously, WTF.

This isn't a matter of "omg I want House and Wilson to get together," this is a matter of "I want my lesbian friend to be able to come out to her Catholic parents and not feel ashamed, like something is intrinsically wrong with her. I am fed up with religious bigots telling people that they're second-class citizens, that their marriage weirds them out and therefore invalid."

And can I just point out that the concept of "protecting" our sexual fantasies is ludicrous - I thought fandom agreed that part of the reason people slashed is because it's "forbidden." Making the world accept gay marriage is going to take the stigma off, albeit gradually, and then part of the charm of slashfic will be gone for some people.

You know, she really wasn't saying anything of the sort. She was talking about "zealotous" supporters of gay marriage, i.e. "I AM SUPPORTING GAY RIGHTS BY READING SLASH, BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH" and how really they only support gay marriage because of their own self-serving agenda.

All the opposition to this secret is interesting. Why is no one willing to even consider that slash fangirls might not always have the purest of intentions? Specifically, why is no one willing to consider how exploitive slash and yaoi can be?

If the OP was saying that, the secret was poorly worded. It said nothing about how those slashers show their "zealous" support--I'd consider going on protest marches and constantly championing gay rights to be zealous (not in a bad way), and that doesn't necessitate the slashers making any connection between their love of slash and their support of gay rights. The fact that "zealous" is in parentheses really makes it look like the OP is assuming this about every slash fan that supports gay rights.

This.

Personally, I don't care why people are pro-equality, I just care that they are. If someone is so simple as to support gay marriage because of "teh pretty yaoi," I'm just thankful that they're influenced by slash, and not some crazy religion.

Who believes that they're supporting gay rights by reading slash?? I've never seen someone say that.

I'm sure you're right, I'm sure there are people out there who support gay rights because of the pretty. My point is, who cares? They're not going to smarten up.

Specifically, why is no one willing to consider how exploitive slash and yaoi can be?

Care to expand on that?

Wouldn't the the ones without good intentions be more likely to be against real-world gay rights?

Re: 107

No one is saying that slash cannot be exploitative, but I tend to think that the people who slash and are against gay rights are the exploitative ones. And if slash helps someone realize that gay marriage is a good thing, then you know what that is awesome. And yes it may start out on shallow reasons, but chances are in slash fandom you have met someone who is actually gay (the number of lesbian slashers is surprisingly high and robust) and then it grows from there.

You know what, I honestly don't mind if people support it for shallow and stupid reasons. I am still glad that they support it, but then again this is one of the few issues that is black and white to me. I can't really connect with anyone who is opposed to it, where as I will support and be happy when I see people that do, no matter what their reasons are.

"I like slash because it gets me off, but I don't support gay rights," is far more exploitative and a much better thing for the OP to be wanking about.

Re: 107

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2008-11-25 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, s/he was saying exactly that.

I tend to think less of slash and yaoi fangirls who are (zealously) pro-gay marriage... Personally, I think they only care about protecting their sexual fantasies, or at least feel they have to be pro-gay rights because they're into gay porn.

That is, s/he thinks less of all slash and yaoi fangirls who are pro-gay marriage, because s/he automatically assumes that they only care about their sexual fantasies or feel obligated to be pro-gay rights because they like the porn. I don't know where you're getting the "I AM SUPPORTING GAY RIGHTS BY READING SLASH" thing, because I have never seen anyone say that, and they posted their picture about "zealous supporters" with a background of... a protest march.

Slash fangirls can easily not have the purest of intentions, but the fact that the OP automatically thinks less of anyone who happens to both a)like slash and b)support gay rights is honestly insulting, not to mention really, really damn confusing.

Glad I'm not the only one confused here. I have no idea what was going through the OP's head, but if [livejournal.com profile] paperclipchains is right, this secret was very, very poorly worded, and, if I may say so, in pretty shitty taste considering the election.

Haha, not that one can expect any less from fandomsecrets.

I thought part of the reason people slashed was to get rid of the icky vagina.

Re: 107

I thought fandom agreed that part of the reason people slashed is because it's "forbidden."

It started that way. Nowadays slash is usually a kink, just like incest (another "taboo").
