..Wha? A lot of people have been saying this and I don't get it. Explain? I'm not trying to start a fight, I'm just genuinely curious as to how other people see it.

Shawn really rubs me the wrong way (and I usually love tricksters). It feels like he can get away with treating Gus however the heck he wants to, and Gus will just go along with it (protesting all the way, but still coerced).
I admit, I haven't watched it in a good long while--lost my taste for it. But it was the Comic Con episode that did it for me. Gus is "boring pharmacist guy." But he has a wacky hobby that he's really into. Shawn just kept making fun of him. It didn't feel like friendly mockery to me--it felt genuinely like "This is so stupid, I can't believe you like this, what is wrong with you?"
And then at the end, it felt like Shawn was getting all the things Gus would've loved, and Gus got table scraps. (I wish I could remember detail; this was years ago, so I just remember feeling mildly nauseated when I turned off the tv).

Shawn will do nice things for Gus, but the thing is, Shawn is so manipulative of everyone that I have trouble thinking of it as sincere. I think he sees that Gus might leave or spoil his fun if he doesn't throw him a bone every now and again, and that's what he does. To be fair, I think Shawn treats everyone this way, which is why the idea of Shawn in any real relationship doesn't fly for me. Shawn does what is best for Shawn. He needs Gus, I won't deny it. I think he also likes that feeling of power over people, and he has a lot of power over Gus. On some level, I guess he uses Gus for emotional support, but I don't feel that he gives Gus any of that back.

I don't know. Like I said, it's been awhile since I watched it. I just had to stop because much as I loved the other characters, Shawn creeped me out. I probably would've liked it better if he didn't almost always come out with the upperhand over everyone. There's also the idea that a relationship is governed by the person with the least interest in maintaining it, and it seems like Shawn calls most, if not all, of the shots.

I suppose I shouldn't've made a declarative statement. I feel like Shawn doesn't love Gus, and uses him. It's just my opinion on the show. I hope it didn't sound argumentitive--something about Shawn makes me feel bitter, I guess. (Bitterer than I realised...yikes.)

YES. THE COMIC CON EPISODE. XD I don't particularly dislike Shawn but that eepisode, man. He could not have been a bigger douche if he tried. It seemed aalmost out of character (as the two of them have talked about comics on the show before, I think) but maybe that's wishful thinking. Man, I did not like that episode. Left such a bad taste in my mouth - and considering it was the season finale, that's not something you want to be left with during a hiatus. So I can definitely see what you mean there.

You know, a lot of what you said makes perfect sense and I can understand how see it that way. I gotta say, I had not looked at it that way until this thread.
