I think the difference here is Galadriel also being invested in him. IMO, both parties in the relationship should be invested in each other. I think there is also the question of self respect and dignity, which first and foremost the individual should have for themselves. If I don't treat myself with respect or dignity, how can I expect to recognize whether the person I am with is doing the same to me? I think that's when you get into the terminology. Did Gimli ever lose his self respect? etc. Also, the context is completely different, lol. Dude was on a mission to stop Sauron.
