Good news! He got less crazy and racist as he got older. He wasn't so much crazy as terrified of literally everything. It made the stories good, but also meant he had really rotten beliefs about a lot of shit. And truthfully even when he got better he wasn't great, but he knew he'd fucked up and both regretted it and tried to rectify it the best he could. So take that as you will, I suppose.

I would love to know more about this, if anyone has resources. I assumed he died racist and scared. TBH it would make me feel a bit better about loving his writing if he tried to be better later in life.
