"my" side of fandom is dying

(Anonymous) 2020-04-22 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)

So I'm part of a fandom that used to be popular among the older crowd.
Those people have largely moved on due to the source material constantly changing, alienating previous fans, and the fandom becoming younger.
I think it's actually great, to have an entire new generation interested in the fandom, and personally, I have no problem with the source material changing because it doesn't mean the older stuff is suddenly nonexistent.

But. (Because there's always a but.)

The newgen is migrating from Wattpad and FFN to AO3.
Most of the stories in this particular fandom on sites like Wattpad and FFN are largely character/reader oriented.
That's fine. The quality varies from holy-shit-why to pretty good. It's not my cup of tea, but to each their own.

In contrast, almost none of the older fans have written or are willing to write in that particular genre.

So nowadays stories that aren't character/reader insert fics, either get no comment or are harshly critisized for having problematic content such as dark themes, rape, general kinky fuckery, even though the tags are there and trigger warnings are in place. (The source material
itself can be very dark at times and have featured some of these themes, canonically.)
And the newgen are apparently so accustomed to antis, that they feel the need to leave very negative, non-crit comments on fics they know they won't like based on the tags. And it's. So frustrating.

(And of course, there are almost no negative comments on the character/reader insert fics, because people who aren't into the genre know to leave it the fuck alone.)

I'm annoyed because some of my favorite authors have been getting this treatment lately, and there's been a decrease in the content they're putting out.

:(

On the one hand, non-character/reader fics posted to AO3 is my ideal in any fandom, but on the other hand yeah, bitching about dark, problematic stuff that was warned for sucks. People write some fucked up shit in fic. You don't have to read it.

There's something kind of hilarious to me about the idea of "older" fans posting on Wattpad. Old fans put their fics in mimeographed fanzines.

That's not what AYRT said though. They said the newgen fans are migrating from Wattpad. Which definitely checks out.

I had read it as the the fandom used to be on Wattpad and FFN and newgen fans were now taking the fandom with them to AO3, but I can see how it might be the newgen were used to Wattpad and FFN for their previous fandoms and were now migrating to AO3 in order to join the fandom in questions. That makes more sense.

All of this is so fucking baffling to me. I am so glad I have not run into these kinds of 'fans', because...wow. Fuck all that.
