Re: But that's the whole point of fanfic??

Nowhere has OP said anything about people's right to post Steve-bashing fic. They are not campaigning to become mayor of fandom and outlaw Steve-bashing. People's freedoms are not being threatened.

OP simply wishes there wasn't so much of it. It rubs them the wrong way. A lot of people feel that way about character bashing, and it's okay for them to feel that way. They're not doing anything wrong.

I'm not saying they are. I'm saying their statements are contradictory and ridiculous. We aren't in fandom to ignore canon. We either work against it or with it, but it's there. And they said people are good at tagging, so why are they even noticing the bashing in the first place unless they are going looking for it?

Because I don't want my fics to spend so much time on Steve, Team Cap and CW. Anon above got it right. I just would like to have more fic to read that explores the themes I enjoy.

AYRT

Oh, well then. Anything else you want? Jeez.

Ignore them, nonny. They apparently don't understand that when people feel things, and want things, and have opinions, they are not automatically fascist dictators forcing others to bend to their will.

We aren't in fandom to ignore canon. We either work against it or with it, but it's there.

I mean, I ignore canon all the time. But that aside, people have feelings and opinions about things. Your argument seems to boil down to "It's ridiculous to have opinions and feelings about things other people do," which is just a really weird argument. Of course people have opinions and feelings about things other people do! As long as they're not being rude and hurtful in how they express those opinions and feelings, it's fine.

And frankly, character-bashing is a particularly normal thing for someone in fandom to have opinions and feelings about. Have you not been in fandom long?

so why are they even noticing the bashing in the first place unless they are going looking for it?

Uhh, I notice all kinds of stuff I'm not looking for in fandom, all the time. Also, if OP ships a smaller pairing, they may have read all the fic that immediately appeals to them, and be in the "lower your standards" phase.

Personally, I really dislike Steve-bashing, but I've had to swallow my dislike and read around it sometimes in order to have anything to read at all. Do I blame the writer for writing it? No. But is it the kind of thing I'd grouch over in private, to a friend, absolutely.

This person brought their feelings to F!S, which is another totally appropriate thing to do with those feelings, because it's Fandom Secrets. The whole point is sharing feelings and opinions you wouldn't post on your tumblr or wherever.

You missed the point I'm making. "Learn to ignore canon, people." is the secret. The OP seems to be saying, stop writing stories about the canon that bothers you. And I am saying, that's ridiculous. That's the point of fanfic. I'm not saying their feelings on the matter are ridiculous, I'm saying their stated opinion "learn to ignore canon" is ridiculous. Clear? Clear.

Also, it's easy to exclude tags from searches, no matter what the pairing. That's a pretty specious argument.

You have entirely misread their secret. They are telling you you've misread their secret. I'm telling you you're misread their secret. It's quite clear you're misread their secret. And yet, here you are.
