Sadly, the canon that was written piss-poorly is the canon that all of us who don't get psychic messages from the imaginary Dany in our heads has to work with. And canonically, Dany was a monster who burned innocent people alive because they were in her way. If you grow a single coping skill, let it be the one that allows you to move past the fact that you spent years of your life stanning a terrible, terrible imaginary person.

NAYRT

I didn't feel that strongly about her until the final episodes when the show gave her the "Cyclops in Avengers Vs X-Men" treatment.

Like AvX was the decade-long culmination of Cyclops protecting the few remaining mutants from extinction, then Wolverine poisons the Avengers against him, acting like he was a cult leader. The Avengers kept on attacking him while he was trying to make the world a better place, then he finally snapped so they could all say "See, we were right, he was bad all along!" like they weren't responsible for pushing him to his breakdown in the first place.

though looking back I should have known what they were planning when they acted like Dany burning the Tarlys was a bad thing even though they had just betrayed the Tyrells and gotten Olenna killed.

"Helped save us from the evil ice zombies at great personal cost? Great, we don't need her anymore! Let's go spread Jon's secret that could hurt her after he confided in us!"

"Upset because her friend was just decapitated? Clearly crazy, let's poison her food and undermine her claim to the throne!"

Her claim to the throne rested on being Aerys Targaryen's rightful heir though, a claim that's now been invalidated by Jon's existence. You could just as easily argue that Dany was committing treason by trying to suppress Jon's parentage and claim the Iron Throne under false pretenses.
