Is There a Character Who You Like the Fanfiction Version Of More Than the Original?

(Anonymous) 2020-04-24 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Even though he's an interesting character in the books, fanfiction Snape from Harry Potter has an enjoyable variety of OOC that I can easily get myself invested in.

Fanfiction Kylo and Hux, definitely.

any recs? I'd be interested to get into this ship. Maybe one or two ao3 links?

Absolutely, especially in Hux' case and especially after the movies turned him from "secondary villain with some potential for being interesting" into "punching bag butt of each joke who's so ridiculous it actually diminishes the heroes' accomplishments".

Tsuna, from Katekyo Hitman Reborn.

Huh, Tsuna is like one of my most hated characters of all time. His original personality was so annoying that I purposefully avoided all fic with him, how did people write him?

Generally still timid and high strung, but a lot less flailing and shrieking than the original. Fan ficcers are a lot more willing to have characters actually mature, I think, because there's no "If I change the character I might not be able to drag this out for a hundred more volumes".
Basically all popular KHR fic makes Tsuna smarter or calmer or tougher or in some way less of a mess.

I am so sorry for the mess of a person I apparently am...

ayrt

Agh! You see I should appreciate that, like my pure unadulterated fury at that pissant just cannot imagine him as tolerable, which is what I assume you're saying. (which honestly, in the KHR! fandom it would still be a major blessing given the mass mischaracterization they have for the rest of the cast)

(well fuck, apparently even after all these years my baggage is planted firmly in as my carry-on... still... like what the hell me?!)

Since I am apparently incapable of letting my hatred for that little cockweasel slide, I am at least sane enough to appreciate why that perspective would be a thousand times better than the canon alternative.

aka please ignore me... I did not realize this was my Pandora's box when I asked about it...

So many female characters from shonen - there are exceptions, but it seems like a lot of shonen writers don't really know what to do with girls & women. They just end up as mothers and housewives, smiling and waving as the next generation goes of to have adventures, regardless of what her past characterisation would have said about that.
Nothing inherently bad about being a stay at home mother, but at least in fan fic they get more options.

I definitely agree with all of this.

I don't know if there is an OOC version in fanfiction I enjoy more, but there are definitely fanfic versions that I think are legitimate interpretations of canon characters and are more fully explored in ways that canon didn't have room for.

+1

This. Like I hate it when people change the personality of a character, but I love it when they explore the existing personality.

There are fan versions of characters that I think are more logical and consistent than where they actually take that character in canon, but that are still technically OOC because... That's not how they did it in canon. If the author says, "and now the all-loving perpetually merciful hero will axe murder someone for a petty reason," that is, however dumb, the canon characterisation.

That's a good point. It's weird though, because as much as I argue "but it's canon!" I will also wag my finger during times a show/story pisses on its own canon and I'll praise a fic author for portraying a character "properly," that is, in a way that's consistent with the character or at least acknowledges what's established and works with the character instead of pissing sideways on it.

I like the fanfic versions of most characters better than the original. Even when I love the character in canon, I usually love the fanfic version more.

Which is not to say I love every single fic’s version of a character more than the original. It’s more that fanfiction, as a body, creates this kind of amalgam of the character that I usually end up loving immensely. (Though also there are some specific fic's versions of characters that I love extra hard.)

Peter Hale. He is both MORE and LESS dramatic in fanfic.

Oh, and MCU Clint Barton. The canon Clint is as interesting as wet cardboard. The fanon one is a combo of different comic runs that is much more interesting.

Hard same on Clint
(not disagreeing on Peter, I just haven't watched enough Teen Wolf to say)

I know this is obvious for me, but honestly MCU Loki even though I (mostly) love the canon character. And even then I mean fanfic that doesn't follow the "everyone else was wrong and abusive and he's a sweet cinnamon roll" interpretation (which I DETEST) - it's mostly fanfic writers who get it right put in way more effort toward a redemptive arc than canon ever did. Or will.

he's a sweet cinnamon roll

I'm not familiar with this fandom but is calling people cinnamon rolls a common thing? Because that's...really weird to me.

It's... very common. Very, very common. Across basically all popular fandoms.

Draco Malfoy. All versions of him, not just "leather pants" Draco.

Itachi Uchiha.

I dunno, I'm not a huge fanfic reader and I'm generally not into changing canon too much, sans one or two exceptions.
