Fondue

Has anyone here had fondue? I've always wanted to do it but my sister says it is a waste of money (she has never had it either). How did you enjoy the experience and food?

I have. For one year when we were in Boston my family treated my to a dinner with my dad at a chocolate restaurant. One of the things they had was a chocolate fondue. Was delicious.

I have had chocolate fondue - both homemade and dining out. I've never had cheese fondue though.

My parents were given a fondue set when they got married because it was the early 70s. A couple of times in my childhood they would bring it out and make a cheese fondue. I found it fun to dip bread in the pot, although I wasn't fond of the wine taste in the cheese or the use of Swiss cheese. I might like the taste better these days, depending on the recipe, but I feel like fondue is something that needs to be enjoyed in a faux wood-paneled room with a beaded curtain somewhere.

I don't think it would be that expensive to make, at least as a fun treat. The cheeses aren't the cheapest, but hardly the most expensive. You don't need an actual fondue set.

I had it once. Someone made it from a ready-made kit though... it was okay. Granted, I haven't had it in 20 years so I wouldn't know how expensive the required cheeses get now. I would like to have it "for real" though.

You'll have to define fondue, please.
Is it the one where you cook its of meat in boiling oil, where you dip bits of bread in melted cheese, or bits fruit in melted chocolate?

Tried it on a visit to Switzerland. Nothing special.

I mean, if you make it yourself it’s probably not super expensive? I’ve only had it at a restaurant once and it wasn’t bad. It wasn’t omg amazing either. I think it might actually be more fun to do at home, but then I like to cook. If you don’t, it wouldn’t be a good entry point into cooking.

We do it every year for our christmas dinner. Cheese,broth/oil, and chocolate for dessert.

It's delicious and very fun.

As a fan of cheese, I have to say no.
The taste isn't bad, so much as it's kinda bland. If you make the fondue yourself it can be amazing, but restaurants that offer it tend to be very... meh.
