Does anyone have a good online source for ordering flour?

(Anonymous) 2020-04-25 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
All the grocery stores in my area are out, which is true pretty much everywhere. The online suppliers that I have bought from before (King Arthur and Bob’s Red Mill) are out. The one time I braved Costco since the lockdown started, all they had was bleached flour, which makes crap bread, like a dry sponge. I found a store (not a mill) that has 50 lb sacks of unbleached bread and all purpose flour for about $30, but since they’re in VA and I’m in CA, shipping is $60. That works out to $1.80/lb, about double what I’d pay for it normally if I just bought a couple lbs. There’s not many reviews of them online, and the ones I could find suggest their brick and mortar store is awesome but online ordering is a crapshoot.

I think it’s great that people are suddenly into baking, but if I’d known just how scarce flour would get I would’ve bought a few extra five pound sacks during my last baking bonanza.

I wish I knew, anon. I just barely found flour on Thursday and that's only because I got in the line at the grocery store to go in right after the old folks were done. I saw four bags of flour left and managed to snag one. I hope you're able to find flour soon!

AYRT—most of the listings I’ve seen have been at least $2/lb, so I’d be better off buying from the company I found this morning.

How do you make your bread, Anon?

AYRT—dump flour and water and some of the pseudo starter (I had part of an envelope of yeast in the back of a drawer so I made a flour/water/yeast slurry and have been feeding it a bit of flour and sometimes molasses to keep it alive) in a bowl, stir it, leave it until it starts to bubble, add more flour and some salt and maybe herbs or olives, knead it, let it rise, punch it down, shape it into a loaf, let proof, bake at ~450 or so until it’s brown on the outside.

Honestly, unless you managed to score free shipping from King Arthur, it probably would have come out to about the same per pound as the VA place. As long as you can use up 50 lbs of flour before the weevils get it, that might be your best bet.

AYRT—I have a dorm fridge an old roommate left that I only plug in when I’m starting seeds. If I take the shelves out I think I could just wedge a 50 lb sack in it; it’d keep until I could use it all, then. Plus I still have to go to work so I could always bring my coworkers flour. They actually have King Arthur pizza flour and bread flour, but not all purpose; maybe I should get proper high protein bread flour and really work on perfecting sourdough. I could save the couple of pounds of all purpose I have left for pancakes and stuff.

I sometimes see flour (along with Lysol and hand sanitizer) pop up on WalMart, but it's a real crapshoot because I've ordered stuff and then later had an email sent that they were out of stock.
