It was a specific story that had me throwing in the towel for soulmate AU's for a while. Literally, the summary was this:

From the moment he was born Albert DaSilva was special. He had a name written over his heart – fourteen perfect letters, small, ink-black and standing out against the freckles of his skin like a promise. When he was old enough to understand, his mother sat him down and told him with a smile, “That’s a heartmark, my dear. It means there’s a boy out there you will love with everything you’ve got." She paused. "He holds your heart.”

Soulmate AU in which Race is Albert's soulmate but Albert isn't Race's.

And I may have over exaggerated that everyone ends up depressed as fuck, since idk, I couldn't finish the series, but thats the first fic of four and each one sounds hella more depressing than the rest.

Honestly I do like a little drama when it comes to soulmates, but it's a very fine edge on how much angst I can take. It really just depends on the type of soulmate AU we're talking about most of the time. The thinking that you could be bad for your soulmate can get on my nerves depending on how it's written, but I adore some of the fic where their mark/vision suddenly appears when they enter a room full of people and they think they might have lost their chance to find their soulmate, because there's nothing you can do about it, y'know?

Overall though, I only became a fan of soulmate AU's because the idea that there is a match for you in this world, be it friend, lover, or forever, is just such a kind and wholesome ideal. It doesn't have to be perfect right off the bat, there can be resistance/disbelief once you first discover who your soulmate is, but overall it's a theme that invites happiness and understanding all around. Seeing some of these fics filled with bitter jealousy or disbelief fed by selfish intentions, well, it just comes back as how fucked up humanity must be that even in a fake world which plainly matches you to someone you share a soul with, people still manipulate the rules to make it a world where people are destined to suffer sometimes.

Like, I get that people want to spice things up from time to time, but the whole appeal of soulmates to me is that there is always someone that exists who fits you perfectly. it's supposed to be happy, so when it isn't, idk, it just sucks.
