Re: Discouragement and Fic Writing

(Anonymous) 2020-04-26 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
In general, or via a comment/review?
Generally speaking, this does not bother me. I honestly couldn't care less about random people spewing their thoughts like it's the morning after new years. If I like something, I like it, and nobody is about to tell me otherwise.

In a fic, well, tbh, I don't write fic, so I haven't experienced this personally. Hell, I consider myself lucky that I've never seen someone respond like that at all recently. This seems a very early 2000's dig, where most disclaimers would point out that their fic includes m/m, etc, and literally say, 'if you don't like, don't read', not to mention don't click on fics with content clearly stated, because nobody is buying your apparent surprise... So any bash on the paring then comes across as little more than pathetic posturing, or being completely unable to swallow the bitter pill that someone might have a different opinion than themselves so they decide to lash out.
If it's a secondary ship, then that's a whole 'nother story. I've probably done it myself where I've mentioned paring #C might be something I don't typically like or tend to avoid. If I've ever done it at all, it would've been said very casually, or offhand, because it would lead up to a complement at being able to apply these characters in a way I managed to not hate, otherwise I would completely ignore those aspects of the fic. I can however see how people might mention their distaste for a particular paring when commenting on something they have liked overall. At this point I get how it can be discouraging, as unfortunate as it is, but overall if they liked the fic, that means you're doing a good job. Not everyone is going to agree on the same cup of tea.

My advice is to keep one trucking. If you're currently getting bad feedback from other fans, then write things for yourself. Pay attention to the people who share similar interests, and remember that nobody can please everybody, so critique will come regardless of what you like, do, or say. If you like a pairing you like them for a reason, so go back and remember what moved you about that pair. Your feelings are no one else's but your own, and if you like something, you like it, fuck everybody else.
